You're dealing with people who are fucking nuts to begin with. Rationality is not their long suit.
They may be mindless grunts, but the minds that control them seem to exhibit a considerable level of rationality. Those minds are playing one of worst hands ever delt to any significant international fraction rather better than might be expected. Compare that to the United States of 2001-2012, which was delt the most powerful hand that was ever delt to any international player, and played against other players who manifestly had practically no cards, and yet the United States had managed to loss most of what we started with, and is struggling not to lose more.
All evidence seems to be that outside their delusions about the Koran, they see the real chessboard on which both they and we play much more clearly than we do, and play more ruthlessly by our reckoning (not by theirs as they think killing people with drones as being equally ruthless as terrorism) but also more rationally.
If rationality is judged by result of one's actions in pursuit of one's goals using means available to one, then the U.S. has been one of the rather less rational players in the world, and has repeatedly played vastly superior hands into the ground. I have yet to come up with any examples after 1814 where the U.S. played a hand equal to those of our opponents and won.

No. I am someone who is in favor of gun rights, and I will say that there is no logical way a armed populace would make any difference here.

I think you missed my point. I am not for banning all guns. But America at least has a flooded market, and judged by what I saw today up there our flooded market may be bleeding up there.
In a utopia I would not care who owns one, but when you see needless death every day in the news from accidental, kids playing with them, suicide, domestic murder, gang violence, and mass shootings as much as we have down here in the States the status quo is unacceptable.

Are you suggesting that we stopped?
2006, 2008 and 2012 should be indications that enough Americans got wise to stop the GOP. The only reason they held onto Congress is because of massive Gerrymandering. They lost the popular vote, measured in total votes cast for GOP candidates vs. Democrat candidates. This should be especially impressive given how the Democrat leaders have done everything in their power to repeatedly bitch-slap and demoralize liberals in America or otherwise throw the election to the GOP. The only reason 2010 happened was because of Obama's piss poor leadership. So yeah, I think it's fair to say there is a sane part of America. I'm not discounting the batshit part, they're still a solid 40% of the likely voters.

By "we", you mean a bunch of loud mouthed Tea Baggers, a corporate media that fawns all over them and a spineless Democrat party willing to cave in as soon the GOP says "boo", yes. Election results indicate that not all of us are Tea Bagging morons.
Granted, it shouldn't be that close. If every American voter was rational, voting according to their best interests and against the party screwing them over, the GOP would probably have 2 or 3 Representatives in Congress and maybe even a single Senator if the turnout in one state was especially small.
