Hi Ian's mom.
He who loves God cannot endeavour that God should love him in return - Baruch Spinoza
Hello. My son is around Ian's age too so we share that in common. Of course, red is a much better color than green. Just thought you would like to know that. LOL

And Fidel you made my day. Thank you for the warm welcome. I think the next argument you have with Ian is when he gets upset that you're more popular than he is. Welcome to the forums.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Helicopter parenting is not a good method. The best you'll get out of it is that your son, as soon as he is capable of minimal independence will leave the house without hesitating. Just an advice, from a well behaved 20 year old man with a lovely mother that was never too paranoid about my activities. I'd go one step further and say that my mother's permissive policy allowed me to grow as an individual; so yeah, your methodology doesn't have my approval.

He is free to do as he pleases as long as he remembers he is still bound by some of my house rules. Ian lives with me still because he has no way to take care of himself otherwise. Ian has mental health issues you are not aware of and they can cause issue without any help from me. As for your approval or disapproval of my parenting methods. Just because it appears to be "helicopter parenting", it isn't Ian is the only one home everyone else moved out. If Ian had stable finances he would be most welcomed to move out if he so chooses. Try to keep in mind while I appreciate the overwhelming support all of you provide to my son. There is 2 sides to every coin. Respectfully, PJ
Welcome.
There's no inherent shame in still living with your parents at that age, especially if there are mental issues involved. I know, because I was in and out of mental hospitals and didn't move out of my parents' house until I was 25. It's good that you're supportive of your son, because I've seen too many instances of parents that not only won't support their kids in such a situation, they won't even acknowledge that a problem exists.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell
