My dad's battalion stumbled across a small work camp in Austria in 1945.  He said "we could smell it long before we could see it."  He didn't particularly like jews but he said it was the worst thing he saw during the entire campaign, which for him began at Salerno.

Not liking an entire label or hating an entire label is absurd. That is not to say you cant dislike or hate an idea. The idea that religion is a good way to view reality is a bad idea. The idea that you are special by proxy of religious label is also a bad idea. 

 But yea, bet it was extremely nasty and horrible to look at. Glad the allies kicked Hitler's ass. I can tell you for myself, there is no way I could have even made it to the beaches from the boats. I am a physical wimp and mentally knowing how scared shitless when my mom has health issues, I am just glad there are are those mentally fit to do it.

The other thing about WW2 is that while Hitler was entirely to blame for it, it didn't help that we left Germany to rot after WW1. If we had lifted them back up it would have made Hitler's rise to power highly unlikely. Put a charismatic speaker in front of a starving population who promises them glory, no matter how deluded that man is desperate people will follow.

The problem with "nation building" now is that we still have old school politicians with parents who were around in WW2 which is why Bush stupidly did what he did, and why we haven't had anything but quagmires and stalemates since WW2.

By most modern estimates from active WWII historians, between 5 to 6 million Jews perished in concentration camps. There was not, at least to my knowledge, any concentration camp that was designed as an "execution camp".

Stop right there and get you facts straight. There have been numerous. Maidanek, Sobibor and Treblinka have been built with the sole purpose of systematically killing as many people as possible. And there's absolutely no dissent among historians that the intent was to eliminate at least all European jews. You get it from the horse's mouth, so to speak. The memoires of Rudolf Höss, commander of Auschwitz and later supervisor of the concentration camps system speak volumes, as do the witness testimonies of Franz Stangl, commander of Sobibor and Treblinka. And then of course there is the protocol of the Wannsee conference, held in january 1942, where the intent was made clear by Rainhaird Heidrich. There's the speech of Heinrich Himmler at a conference in Posen in october of 1942, talking to senior SS-officials about eliminating the jews (it has even been recorded) and there's the lesser known testimony of the SS-lawyer Konrad Morgen before the Auschwitz tribunal, held between 1963 and 1965 in the German city of Frankfurt.

And that's only scratching the surface.
