The First Cause? Prime Mover Argument
#81
RE: The First Cause? Prime Mover Argument
The difference is that math defines what the potential is but that does not translate into an infinity of actual sensible bodies. For example someone can conceive of making an actual set of dots to which you can always add one more. But to actually draw an infinite number of dots is impossible. No matter where you are in space time there will only be a finite number of dots.

It's a stupid argument, and atheists shouldn't feel obligated to entertain this line of reasoning. We don't know exactly why the universe exists. We have great hypotheses, some of them enjoy considerable support from the empirical data we've collected, but still ... there's so many unanswered questions, so much we have yet to discover, all we can say is, we don't know. To the theist, filling in our ignorance with absurdity is a badge of honor, which is ridiculous when you think about it (for more than 5 seconds), yet for some reason many atheists feel compelled to take a defensive posture, which implicitly cedes to their ridiculous reasoning (as if not knowing everything and not being able to answer every question on earth somehow weakens our position, it's absurd).

I don't even know what the line of reasoning even is any more here...

It started off as appallingly poor, with unfounded assumptions and outright falsehood, and has degenerated into much worse incoherent nonsense.  You should be proud of the fact that you do not understand nonsensical drivel.  If you believed you did, it would show that there was something terribly wrong with your thinking.

Yeah, I mean... I saw people talking about infinity and the natural numbers and such, which is right in my wheelhouse, and though "oooh, I wanna get in on this" but when I went back and read the thread I didn't really get what was going on...

Don't worry, my friend.  If this be the end, then so shall it be.

The debate right now is whether the premise about infinite regress is or is not axiomatic. Any argument in favor of a necessary being must exclude infinite regress of one variety or another.
