There is obviously something wrong with Rachel Dolezal that goes beyond pretending to be black. She lied about more than just her race

In that same newspaper profile, Dolezal told the author she was born in a. She claimed that her family lived off the land in rural Montana, hunting for food with “bows and arrows.” .

The article mentions histrionic personality disorder, which from what I gather involves obsessive need for attention....I guess she fits the description

But seriously, how black is not black enough any more? Where do you draw the line? As soon as you make race a membership criterion, it inevitably leads down a very murky unpleasant road. People of Color are not a separate kind of people that you can distinguish in a meaningful way from the rest. It's something that is to be identified with culture as much as anything and cannot possibly be formalized without turning into some kind of dystopian scenario where people have to get genetically tested or show proof of ancestry.

If this were about her being fired because she is white, then I could understand being offended. I would be too because that's not right. It's not about whether she is Black enough. That is so far from the issue that it borders on being a straw man. From its inception, the NAACP has had many White people in leadership positions and they did not have to pass for black to get there.The issue here is that this woman misrepresented herself when it wasn't even necessary. Why did they ask about race? Why does any job application ask about race. Should we implement a Don't Ask don't Tell policy about race?

If the lie was not necessary for the position, then what was it for? It's hard to plead ingenuous motives in the wake of a deception.

Which indicates that the issue is her dishonesty, rather than her perceived race. No one likes being the victim of a lie.

If tit was a case of her identifying with her black self because her white parents had rejected her, then I can identify with it. It may come as a surprise, but there is a striking correlation between being bi-racial and being a "Late Deafened Adult" (ADA)

Only a couple years ago did I realize that I'm not alone in feeling like the mulatto of the disability world, not quite fitting into any group. As the hearing world became less accessible to me, I made a few excursions into the he deaf world. And there really is a Deaf World. People who were born deaf don't see deafness as I do, as a medical issue, but as a cultural phenomenon. They view hearing aids the same way I might view skin-lightening cream. Because I can talk, I stand out before I even try to fit in. I was told that I had to choose, that I had to identify with one world ort the other but not both. For a while I rejected that idea. But since I am by language and culture connected to the hearing world and sign language is just as inaccessible to me as speech was before I got my implant, I chose the hearing world.

Some folks may say I should have chosen the deaf world, that I am not being true to myself pretending to be a hearing person with hearing friends. But that was my choice and no matter what we choose to do, somebody somewhere will say we should have done something else, so I say fuck that.

I guess the difference is you guys can't fire me. You're stuck with me.
