And "modern technologies" require resources and power, and the will to use them. If it's not helping the bottom line lots of people won't.

Those carved monsters you see on cathedrals and other buildings aren't necessarily gargoyles.  They're technically called 'grotesques'.  'Gargoyle' refers to a specific type of grotesque designed to direct water away from the sides of a building, using a spout generally incorporated into the mouth of the sculpture.

Imma keep calling 'em all gargoyles.
