The earth currently has approximately 6 trillion tons of top soil suitable for agriculture,  down from estimated 10 trillion tons in 1970.    Erosion caused by human activity continue to remove approximately 1.5% of the 6 trillion tons each year.    The removed top soil mostly wash down rivers and end up at the bottom of the sea.

Unlike proven oil reserves,  which increases every year as more exploration uncovers more oil,   there is little prospect of significant discovery of new previously unknown topsoil reserves.

Rhinoceros horn was never, ever used as an aphrodisiac in traditional Chinese medicine. It was used for the treatment of fevers.

It worked every bit as well as an antipyretic as it would have as an aphrodisiac (nil = nil).

The upper limits of human survival from jumping into water is about 186 feet (or 56.7 meters).

I found this after watching this scene from Lethal Weapon 2 and wondering how likely it would be for Riggs and Getz to survive such a fall:

I haven’t been able to find stats for the height of the InterContinental Los Angeles Century City where this was shot (or at least the exteriors were), but unless their average floor height is about 31 feet, they’d likely make it. If it was anything but water, they’d probably be dead.

Then again, this is the same movie where a diplomat can get away with being a violent drug lord just because he’s a diplomat.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Evidently, the latest word for what used to be called the Third World is "Non-WEIRD countries." Non-Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich and Democratic.
