What do you know today that you didn't know yesterday?
RE: What do you know today that you didn't know yesterday?
The medical community is working on gene therapy to modify the production of dopamine for treatment of alcohol use disorder. The gene inserted (via a virus) into a specific portion of the brain is glial derived neurotrophic factor (a cell growth factor). In monkeys that were drinking 8 to 10 cocktails a day their daily drinking was reduced by 90%.

A similar procedure is already used in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Overnight olfactory enrichment using an odorant diffuser improves memory and modifies the uncinate fasciculus in older adults

Cognitive loss in older adults is a growing issue in our society, and there is a need to develop inexpensive, simple, effective in-home treatments. This study was conducted to explore the use of olfactory enrichment at night to improve cognitive ability in healthy older adults.Minimal olfactory enrichment administered at night produces improvements in both cognitive and neural functioning. Thus, olfactory enrichment may provide an effective and low-effort pathway to improved brain health.

I'm going to give it a try, certainly can't hurt.

Longevity gene from naked mole rats extends lifespan of mice

From the article:
Quote:In a groundbreaking endeavor, researchers at the University of Rochester have successfully transferred a longevity gene from naked mole rats to mice, resulting in improved health and an extension of the mouse’s lifespan.

Naked mole rats, known for their long lifespans and exceptional resistance to age-related diseases, have long captured the attention of the scientific community. By introducing a specific gene responsible for enhanced cellular repair and protection into mice, the Rochester researchers have opened exciting possibilities for unlocking the secrets of aging and extending human lifespan.

While intriguing, I think working on extending human life before solving the problems of overpopulation and global warming may be putting the cart well before the horse.

I surprise myself with the things I remember with regard to my job as well as other things.  My memory seems to be better now.  I attribute it to not having all the distractions of dealing with people all day or putting up with drama.  For now, I am pretty happy with how well my memory has held up.  I am also not ferrying kids to this, that, and the other thing and fighting traffic on the daily.

I would have to say the Moral Majority and their actions in the 70s. Not too surprising, but it was interesting to learn about them, nonetheless.

My brother applied for a Village Idiot job.
