I know it's an old thread but just for the sake of person asked the question about the free alternative to adobe photoshop I'm gonna leave a reply to let you know there's a website which offers a free photo editor inside which is completely like photoshop. You don't need to download it. Just pick a photo from your pc and start work on it. The site address is [SNIP]
This helped me completing many micro projects without having any photo editing software installed on my computer.
