They both have their niches, DC long distance transmission lines are the favoured solution and 24VDC is the industry standard for control systems. When it come to rotating equipment though, you have no choice other than AC.
Long-distance DC transmission was not an option in Edison's time as the electronics which make it practical were a long way off.
I'll add my opinion that Edison was a complete prick. One his gems of philosophy was that ethics has no place in business.
