Is it so that one can measure distance traveled relative to something?

If the ground i'm standing on is moving at a fixed rate of say x,then i'm also moving in a that rate.
In this case,i'm moving. But i'm not covering any distance relative to the ground. If i choose to move at a rate of say x+1 then i'm covering distance relative to the ground and also moving.
Meaning,i could be moving but not covering distance.
I don't think moving has to be relative to anything though.
