Prayer is not a way for us to change God's mind, it is an opportunity for us to ask God to change our mind and hearts to align with what He wants for us.
I have heard this actually. You don't pray for something you want. you pray to find out what god wants for you. It avoids the problem of praying for something you want/need, not getting it, and saying god failed you somehow.
