You don't pray for something you want. you pray to find out what god wants for you. It avoids the problem of praying for something you want/need, not getting it, and saying god failed you somehow.
Prayer is not a way for us to change God's mind, it is an opportunity for us to ask God to change our mind and hearts to align with what He wants for us.
