I still remember my first trip to Europe and how much smaller the elevators are there compared to our enormous ones here in the states.  I was in Lippstadt, Germany and our office building was so old it still had a functioning paternoster (still does).  I thought those people were batsh*t crazy using that thing.

You can't build spacious elevators in old buildings. Many of them are heritage property and can't be adapted to suit the elevator. Accordingly the elevator has to be adapted. That paternoster is probably protected, so it can't be replaced with something more contemporary.
