RE: How would you react to a gay person who found you TOTALLY repulsive ?

I was going to stay out of it, but since this argument is happening in the common space
of a public thread,
and since others have decided to wade in, I guess I will, too:
**********************************************
1. Exian posted a comment (page 17, Post# 163)
about how this thread was not doing anything to teach guys how to be more attractive.
2. A few comments later (Post#168)
BrokenQuill posted a pic of what she deems to be a good-looking man.
3. A few comments later (Post#178)
Rocket offers a pic asking "what about this?"
and then (in Post#180) advises that the pic is of himself.
4. A few comments later, BrokenQuill (in Post#184),
quoted Rocket's ownership of the picture (from Post#180),
adding her own comment:
" I can't see the picture (blind remember) but most women unless the have a complex
are turned off by a man with a record. "
(the bold is mine....also I think "the" was a typo, and was supposed to read "they")
Rocket responded with shock and disbelief at her statement;
BrokenQuill responded by saying she wasn't judging personally, that it was a blanket observation.
Rocket then responded by saying that BrokenQuill must be a bigot, or she wouldn't have said that.
BrokenQuill then argued that her comment wasn't bigotry.
So here's my two cents:
I must agree with Rocket, that BrokenQuill's comment was bigotry
and this is mainly because of the part of BrokenQuill's comment that I put in bold print:
"unless they have a complex"
This small part of the sentence indicates that BrokenQuill herself thinks that most women will be biased against any man with a criminal record
...unless there is something wrong with that woman.
With this statement, BrokenQuill, is herself, specifying that any exceptions to this rule
can only be women with some degree of psychological imbalance.
She made no such provision to exempt women who are informed,
open-minded women who refrain from passing judgment until they have all the facts.
Plus,
I notice she said nothing condemning the bigotry of any women exhibiting this bias;
She didn't even go so far as to specifically acknowledge that the reality of women who are biased
(against men with records) is an unfortunate reality;
I think anyone it Rocket's position could understandably read such an unsolicited opinion,
especially as an initial reaction to his photo,
as bigotry on the part of the person who offered the unsolicited opinion
...unless she herself bothered to condemn that very bigotry, in the same breath.
But the fact that it was ONLY said:
- as her INITIAL response to Rocket's posting a pic of himself,
- and as an inappropriate comment on his record having a bearing on his attractiveness,
- and because they only women she exempted from her blanket statement are psychologically unbalanced women
...makes Rocket justified in taking umbrage, IMO.
(The fact that her comment said "most" women,
and the fact that it was in response to Exian, is really irrelevant).
