I recall reading an interview with someone that was producing gay male films in the 70s. It was rather interesting as the various laws and community standards changed how the gay adult film industry responded.
It wasn't immediately obvious what would sell, what wouldn't, what might be OK everywhere, and what might garner some trouble in certain states/municipalities.
Deep Throat was an enormous big deal back in the day. 'Regular' Americans went to see that one, it was groundbreaking for the country and the evolution of how the law was going to deal with that.
I have seen Deep Throat, BTW, one of probably 3 or 4 'hetero' adult movies I have seen (Devil in Miss Jones, and The Big Switch and probably one other). I saw DT after hours at an adult theater a friend of mine worked at. He had a private showing for all his gay friends. We made a running commentary (predating Mystery Science Fiction Theater 3000 by decades) and it remains one of my most favorite movie experiences of all time, 40 years later.
Some of the 70s titles in the gay genre were made in ways that such movies are not made today. Some portrayed the lead characters as trying the rest, and then falling in love with each other. Some movies actually had music composed especially for the themes, and some of it was very good and incredibly romantic.
Some times it is clear in a film the leads do not have 'chemistry'. I recall an Al Parker film in which he was paired with another famous top. Well, how's that going to work? No surprise, it didn't work. In the movie, they sat side by side, watched other porn, and masturbated themselves (not each other). Weird that characters in an adult movie would watch an adult movie in the movie to arouse them into making an adult movie, no ?

The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.
