That's exactly the order the team went with. They started with the assumption it was bad data but it checked out. Next, they formulated their naturalistic theories. They started looking at artificial explanations because they do fit and because all the naturalistic theories so far are so improbable.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
