Prayer doesn't bother me in the slightest, if the situation is hopeless. Now, if a person were praying instead of getting out a burning house, that is sad. If a parent is praying because their child is dying and nothing can save him or her, then it isn't sad, at least not in the way that you are implying. I think it is natural and possibly even helpful. Even atheists make wishes. We just don't expect them to come true.
