Another thougth I've had is that after a final boss fight you're left unconscious. You hear someone call your name, and say it's just a bad dream, before waking up and seeing your monster friends. I wonder if this is some kind of reference to some games where it's all just a dream. Like maybe it was teasing the idea that you'd wake up in a bed and see a group of Humans, and the underground was just a dream.
