What was funny about that in Ephesos was that as the group was leaving the public toilet one of the women asked "what did they use for toilet paper?" I was standing next to her so I started to tell her about the spongia and she got this horrified look on her face so she turned to our guide, John the Turk, who had also heard her and was pointing at me saying "yes, yes....the spongia!" This look of shock spread over her face and she said "you mean they shared them?" John said, "if you were rich enough you had your own," which really did not make her feel better at all. To this day I think she feels that we were both full of shit.
