No, religion is directly to blame since it stigmatizes science in schools and fear of scientists since science is so deadly to religion, so when people hear GMO mosquitoes they fear without bothering to research (because religion teaches them not to research, or educate in science) so you have these people screaming really stupid arguments like "What if GMO mosquito bites me?" and it's because they don't know biology in the first place. If they knew even the most rudimentary biology they would know that male mosquitoes are not the one that bite and they are the ones that are GMO that mate with females and create dead larva. - but yeah researching biology might and probably will get them in touch with The Fact of Evolution, so there goes that.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
