Make you some caps, scavenge you some junk, be another place to sell your stuff and fix you up. It's a personal preference whether or not to mess with them beyond the quests.
I have 5 tier-3 shops in Sanctuary, for a total caps cost of what 15k?
The money I've got from that settlement is maybe 1k total so far. So I'm going to have to play a lonnnnnnggg game to recoup even the money I spent.
I guess the most fun of having the bases is mainly just building a cool fort.
