While it obviously doesn't take away from your point and is purely a side-note - there are no real hygenic, or medical reasons to introduce water into the body - except through the mouth, naturally. Quite the opposite - frequent douching disturbs the vaginal ecosystem and can lead to yeast infections and such.
The bad connotation of the word comes from the fact, that it used to be mainly a primitive form of post-coital contraception, as well from the association with female genitals. As for anal douching, or colonic irrigation - it's just quackery and there's no need to do that either, other than for fun, I suppose.
