But what reason is there to have the empathy not to rape and murder a girl?
It is the result of our evolutionary past.
We evolved as a social species, where altruism, cooperation, reciprocity and empathy were part of our survival mechanisms.
Our closest cousins, the bonobo chimps, have many similar (but less developed) behaviors.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
