I have no reliable data on whether Hitler liked pumpkin. However, I have the feeling that pumpkin is a very un Nazi like vegetable, and I don't really see Hitler liking it.
He certainly wouldn't like my favorite vegetarian pumpkin stew as it's both Spanish and *gasp* South American: Begin with onions as before. But add only pumpkin and water until pumpkin is tender. Then add one cup roasted green chilies and two tablespoons cumin. Garnish with sour cream and a dollop of green chili sauce. Chorizo is a good addition, but not, alas, vegetarian.
I'll have to try your recipe. Tis the the season for warm stick-to-your-ribs food and pumpkin stew is one of the best.
Adolf says that Spanish food is ok as long as it is Franco Tortillas or Falange Paella.
I should clarify that I don't cook the butternuts on the stove to a stew but rather "roast" them as solid not too large pieces in the oven at 180 centigrade or more, but completely submerged in the sweet vinegar broth. They acquire a wonderful texture. It was devised by me ad hoc as an ersatz "Sauerbraten" which may or may not be your cup of tea. But it evolved away from that as I made it sweeter over the years. I also sometimes experiment with taking the "stock" and thickening it with starch which results in a nice sauce to pour over the dumplings.
