Because ignorance is bliss. It gives us the warm/fuzzies. Simple as that.
I love my liberal atheists and theists but depending on individual, some get too over protective of religion. Their empathy is there, and I love that part of my species evolution, that is the great part of our existence. The downside to that good intent is far too often it gives cover for the nuts in all the bunches to read the same books to justify harm to others.
Liberals and moderates have to keep in mind that while theists do pick up any holy book and justify compassion with it, others can and do pick up those same books and justify cruelty.The debate isn't about justifying the forceful end of religion through government. It is a mere challenge to any harmful claim someone might justify using a holy book.
If we want a more peaceful world, you cant simply use censorship and set up taboos to get to that peace. But we can agree that common law applies to everyone which allows us to criticize and offend, without fear of physical harm.
