I really like Long Island. It has the benefits of being an island with the beach 15 - 20 minutes away while still having the fast-paced atmosphere (and assholes) of NYC. It's a win/win.
I spent some time at Stony Brook for uni. Didn't feel much of the fast-paced atmosphere you mention, and that's an understatement, but that's probably the difference between Nassau and Suffolk
