Here is how evolution works - simplified for the hard of thinking;
1. Random mutations result in all kinds of odd animals, insects etc.
2. Most of those mutations are no good. They can't catch food or avoid predators as well as the others. They get squished. But a tiny few have some odd new feature that gives them an advantage.
3. These few don't get squished or eaten. They thrive and reproduce while others don't. So species evolve and get better adapted. You need to think of Evolution as a pressure, a hard filter. Anything that can't cope dies quickly, leaving only the best to survive.
