To be honest from my experience on this forum, I've had more people defend communism and Anton Lavey than anything. Clearly this is something that you are passionate about, and I really want to understand why people support communism.
With regard to communism, you are not experiencing the views of atheists so much as international views. Wecome to the whole world. America's moderate democrat, is Europe's conservative. The U.S. is uber conservative by western standards. But socialists are still not communists any more than capitalists are libertarians. People who like chocolate don't necessarily want to drown in it.
As to why people support communism, ideally it's a perfect system. Ideally, there would be no government, and everyone would work for the common good. Unfortunately, it's also an impossible one. Most people do not work for the joy of working although a few do---few of them are plumbers, or ditch diggers. Not all work is fun. Governments may be overthrown, but they don't whither. It's been tried both before and after Marx. The results have been economic failure and totalitariansm. Neither is Marxism, but both appear to be the result of attempting Marxism. I think the belief communism will work is as much a matter of faith as Christianity.
I'm a capitalist because it harnesses man's basic selfish instincts for the common good. But monopolies, the tragedy of the commons, and externalities require regulation. Like democracy it is the best of all the rotten choices.
I'm a socialist where it comes to infrastructure and defence, all utilities and essential services should be run by the state, non-vital services and luxuries should be purchased from private industry. The trouble is when governments try to run the country and services like a business. it isn't a business. It's why essential bus routes get get because they are unprofitable. Profit should not be why they are there. they are a service.
You can fix ignorance, you can't fix stupid.
