Personally I don't think any economic system can work going by its exact definition. Pure capitalism is just as ludicrous as pure communism or pure socialism. This is why I'm attracted to the idea of democratic socialism; to me it's the perfect combination of capitalism and socialism.
Problem is you can't combine capitalism with any other system. In capitalism the profit motive is the sole goal, the sole good, and the sole legitimate aim. Now I'm not about to go out and say that making a profit is evil, but there are other systems of profit making economics which are far more compatible with social protections and morals.
