the possibility of James being already dead while the game is played. The analysis videos make a strong case indeed for this. And what is quite possibly his death cry is heard when the puzzle is complete; maybe it's James convicting and executing himself.

Hmm, yes, that's quite possible. I remember reading on one of the Wiki's that the sound you hear is actually supposed to be horses running around the courtyard, but it definitely sounded more like a yell to me.

But yes; the gallows and everything else is most likely indicating the atoning of James' sins, and the three plaques representing these sins being slotted inside to do so.
