The lead tone there is, again, EPIC.
I turn the distortion all the way up, I drop the low on the eq 33%, mid all the way up, and highs about 66%. I put about 33% compression on it, and most of the effects I put on my guitar never go higher than about 66%. I try to stick to the rules of 3's: 3db intervals on volumes, 3 seconds of silence between songs, 33% intervals on the effects (33% = light sounding, 66% = just right), for every three tracks of guitar you record you should drop all 3 tracks by 3db to make up for the added volume.
When it comes to playing guitar, I think it is all in where and how hard you place your pick palm on the strings and where you place it and when you remove it when you strike that makes all of the difference in the overall sound quality. If you have good palm mute control you can make a cheap guitar sound epic. Fresh strings and good pickups also help, thats why I prefer playing strats..they have all the sounds you could ever want by toggling that pickup lever back and forth. Sort of like this:

See how he switches the pickups between playing..I do that on these videos sometimes..it really helps emphasise certain notes and phrases.
Pick up some youtube vids and get your chops back up to speed. Plenty of people post vids to challenge you or just to help educate.
Playing guitar is like sex. First you string the bitch up tight. Then you tweek it and turn her knobs until she is sweet and hot. Then you pick it nice and slow until you get to a good steady strumming. then you slap that bitch on the body, pinch them strings to make her scream, and build it all up to a climactic explosion. From there you can either pass out or cradle it back down to rest. THAT, to me, is what music should be like..INTENSE!..epic!..orgasmic!
