Now something completely different. I just found out that apparently, Furtwängler performed Beethoven's Ninth on the occasion of Hitler's birthday in '42. How bizarre (in case you don't know, the lyrics in the end are, prominently and repeatedly, "Alle Menschen werden Brüder", all people become brothers). That must have been an obvious provocation. Or just a lot of cognitive dissonance on all sides?
