Most humans get stuck on an umbrella idea, a label, and never want to pay attention to the fact that every religion has sub sects that compete as to how the label/writings should be followed.
Humans are mostly religious due to where they were born, and combine that with a lack of understanding that the reality is we are social and thus form groups to survive. Problem is that those ideas can be false just like the Ancient Egyptians were successful for 3,000 years centering their lives around non existent deities.
No you cannot force any religion out of existence, but humans really need too start facing this reality in order to manage differences in a more civil manor.
If our right wing had it's way and had a majority power, and there was no constitution stopping them, we would look like far too much of the Middle East. No, most Muslims are not terrorists, but they do have a big enough minority that is causing them problems. Our Christian right minority isn't to that level and only secular law has prevented them so far from getting that far. But they do still cause problems.
One major supporter of religion that needs to be dealt with before humans in general can face the truth is government. Governments throughout history have found religion to be the easiest way to control the masses. Until the governments of the Earth find a better way, they will continue to support religion. The alternative, of course, cannot be the kind of draconian atheism we had in the Soviet Union, which only led to a 360 degree backlash when the union broke up. But the contemporary atheistic philosophy that rests on empathy would be great for the people. As long as governments think it’s their roll to control people they won’t go for empathy.
I like what they’ve achieved in the UK where even though the ruling class is still wallowing in religious hogwash, the general public has reached a point where religion is irrelevant.
The god who allows children to be raped out of respect for the free will choice of the rapist, but punishes gay men for engaging in mutually consensual sex couldn't possibly be responsible for an intelligently designed universe.
