There's quite a distinction between being allowed and being force fed. I remember my own school days when religious courses were still part of the curriculum. Still are, far as I know. The difference being, noone sneaked up to you. Your parents could opt you out of that course at any time. Once you turned 16, you could do it yourself. Which I did, out of principle. But I still attended the course, since the teacher holding it was the only teacher I fully respected. So I exchanged having an hour for myself to listening and discussing with that elderly guy, who talked to us not about the bible, but things like ethics, politics and social issues. WWII veteran and sole survivor of his company, which made him hate war with a vengeance.
He's probably long dead by now, but I still extend my fullest respect to him. He never did anything to hook us on christianity, but was always there to listen and to hear our opinions on any given matter.
