I'll explain, from old times itself, humans mated by using visual cues,ie, males with a good physique tend to give more healthier babies and such. This meant more chances of passing on genes.

Even if that's the case, these aren't absolute rules handed down by God himself. Heaps of people in today's day and age have violated a lot of these rules. So what does it matter at the end? Be with the person you want to be and who likes you in return, and all that.

You're reading the whole situation wrong. I'm not saying these rules must be strictly followed by. I'm correcting Losty for thinking these standards were imposed by society. I'm not advocating everyone to follow these rules, do what makes you happy,that is what matters the most everything else only comes second. :-)
