I was on a bus last week and some poor woman with her daughter was traveling away to a relatives. She was divorcing her husband and this was the first move. She was crying and asking her child (12ish) if she had some napkins. The girl didn't so I offered her the tissues I had.
She then said "Your a good christian."
I could have said "Actually I'm an Atheist." But from her earlier outbursts I knew she was a born again Evangelical. So instead I said "I'm not religious."
I checked myself at the time, I know why I checked myself and it bothers me that I had to. It's the first time I've been effected by a minority status. As a white male I'm pretty much the default position. I've lived in poor minority communities but it was always sorta "Walden's pond". I knew I wouldn't be there forever.
So that pissed me off.
Also people in general. Few go even slightly out of their way to help others.
