Hmm...
I always loved the original version of The Game of LIFE. The one with the revenge squares (MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!). I loved that the board had mountains and buildings, and there was enough variability in the randomness to make it fun to try over and over again.

For video games, it's Xenogears, hands down. It's where my bouncy dude avatar comes from. It suffered from translation issues and budget cuts, but despite all its rough edges, it's amazing. Love, hate, obsession, betrayal, a weird version of Christianity, war, abuse, mental illness, loyalty, family, etc., etc. It's not the most original game. It borrows (and sometimes outright steals) from other sources, but it combines everything together in a way that feels like a mostly unified whole. It's one of the most immersive settings I've ever played in, right up there with Mass Effect.
