That depends on which christians you are referring to.The fundamentalists do view the bible as the word of God and interpret most of its texts literally.
The way I see it,christianity being open to man and his own interpretations explains why there are so many sects.There is the literal,metaphorical,and so many other ways to interpret scriptures that no one knows when to use which method.Christians cant even agree on their own beliefs and they are all reading the same book.
There is nothing people will not maintain when they are slaves to superstition
