I'm not an atheist, but I've never told an atheist that they don't have morals. They do have morals.
An atheist is very much capable of mercy and kindness in many greater degrees than a believer of religion, and of course, the vice versa is also true. It is your duty towards your own self to inquire whatever ideology invokes the most magnificent heights to which it's follower can aspire to. That which feels the best in your heart and mind and make you a better person and inspire you to build a better community. I find Islam to be that principle. If atheism or any other religion calls your mind to this goal, then go ahead, answer it.
