The red-white-red triband of Austria has been in almost continuous use since the 1290's and is a representation of the colours of the house of Babenberg the first dukes of Austria, who as the legend goes were granted them after the battle of Acre in 1191 based off the bloodstained tunic he used as a banner after his original was destroyed in the fighting.
Most European flags have a symbolism far more ancient and significant than the US flag.
You'll notice I never said it had more significance, nor did I say it was longer standing.
The lore is what I am invoking. The Star Spangled Banner at Fort McHenry, it's prominence in revolutionary art, Old Glory, Iwo Jima, the moon landing, post 9/11 nationalism.
