The red giant phase is an early phase in my opinion. The sun will run out of fuel someday, completley. Let's discuss the ultimate fate of the universe instead:

First, there are many fates for the end. When God mentioned "will fold the heaven like the folding of a [written] sheet for the records", then"As We began the first creation, We will repeat it.".
When celestial objects deviate from their gravitational orbits, and either hit other objects (due to the first getting caught in the gravitational field of the latter) or gets sucked into a black hole, then that is a "free fall"; the silly thing is your "earthly" mentality and perception of gravity.
I believe the verse was telling us about the time, when the sun becomes a "black dwarf":

The verse didn't speak about earth. Instead, God said:
Sura 21
( 104 ) The Day when We will fold the heaven like the folding of a [written] sheet for the records. As We began the first creation, We will repeat it. [That is] a promise binding upon Us. Indeed, We will do it.
Heaven..not earth.
