Keep in mind, the Qur'an is very damn vague and open to interpretation, one can interpret green to mean, stable, a good country with good economy, striving etc. Not necessarily green. That's what the muslims do, they interpret it to fit what they want, don't let em' fool ya. Which isn't far fetched in the context; Muhammed probably thought islam would turn the arabia desserts into a stable, good, striving country. Apparently it had the positive effect, no matter how green its landscape goes, you can't deny how it has turned the arabian countries into shit. Odd how Allah apparently doesn't like the idea of his followers living a good life.
