It is fishy that the big pharmaceutical companies would repackage Prozac as Sarafem just as it is nearing it's patent expiry date. Then push to have pmdd included as a mental health disorder so as to stop a cheaper alternative by prescription.
Although in the studies I read, sri's (namely Zoloft) were thought to be the best indicator and alleviator of symptoms.
I need to do more research, clearly.
Apparently some research suggests that women with pmdd are more prone to depressive disorders due to societal issues or past history of abuse and therefore are displaying the signs of nothing more than severe pms.
People on this side of the issue seem to want to stop the negative stigma of mental disorder that may interfere with work, custody battles and society status in general.
It's certainly a controversial issue and not black and white.
The clearest thing I can discern from the information I have read so far is that the women involved are indeed suffering and it's a shame that this debate has gone on for twenty years with seemingly no end in sight.
