This just in, in an interview Hon. Julie Bishop MP said she has spoken to Philip Hammond MP, and said quite matter-of-fact that she has a "deeper briefing lined up for this evening to discuss the ramifications for Britain. There are conflicting messages as to whether the period of withdrawal we be the whole 2 years that is allowed under the European Union treaty or whether the European Union countries will want the exit to occur more quickly." Spears then asked "some of the foreign ministers in Europe are pushing for that aren't they?" She responded "I understand that to be the case. They are obviously seeking to put stability back into the European Union as soon as possible and that's in (I think) everybody's interest. There's a great deal of volatility at present, a great deal of uncertainty, ..."
From the sound of it, there is a push for clarity from UK for a swifter withdrawal process, commentators have been saying that the UK could wait several months before invoking Article 50, and then wait two years to fully withdraw from the EU - we'll have to wait and see, but it does appear that once the Article is invoked the withdrawal period is expected (politically) to be somewhat smoother than that.
