It's an unfortunate revision of history (and it doesn't say anything decent about how we view those people).  The abrahamic kissing cousins are almost uniquely gullible in this regard, though that might have had something to do with killing people who didn't tow the line.

Don't forget they had much less real knowledge to build upon. So I'm not sure, they were really aware of telling myths. So many unknowns back then and so many people still taking nature's forces for some god's work.
