All religions start as a means to explain the world, but over time it evolves into worship of the god/gods/spits/demons that they believe to be responsible for natural processes . Rulers use this newly found religion as a means of social control. This is what the Romans did to Christianity, the Persians did to Islam extra....
I do not think it is necessary to believe that the same God who has given us our senses, reason, and intelligence wished us to abandon their use, giving us by some other means the information that we could gain through them
