I'd install Mint if I installed a Linux, I reckon. It seems the most n00b friendly.
That's why I said you should run it from a live cd instead of installing ubuntu. Or grab a virtuallization software and install it as a virtual OS. Either way, try and get a feel for it so the you can move on to the linux world when M$ eventually screws up again.
