There was discrimination, but it only started with christianity. There were quite a number of jews in imperial Rome and a significant number of jews simply stayed after Jerusalem was sacked. I'm not sure if you can call medieval jews refugees from the Middle East, since almost a thousand years went by after Titus destroyed Judea.
The irony is that jews were much better off in muslim realms at the time. In the Middle Ages the muslim world was much more tolerant towards other religions than the christian world. Same goes for Middle Eastern and Spanish christians.
