It's compensating, because if you're a closeted gay, you think that saying or even doing anti-gay stuff is going to throw people off the scent about you.
A lot of gays can spot this compensation very easily, because we've all been there before we came out. I said some downright disgusting things about gay people when I was a teenager. Why? I hadn't accepted it in myself, and I had people questioning my sexuality and wanted them to stop.
I wasn't shocked in the slightest when it came out that Omar Mateen (Pulse nightclub murderer) was a mentally disturbed closet-case gay man with daddy issues, who was in conflict between his religion and his sexuality. I actually expected the news before it came out.
