Perhaps all of us 'straight' people have simply created mental barriers that prevent us from feeling certain things toward someone of the same sex, because we were taught that that was wrong growing up.
This may just be me, but I have to respectfully disagree.
I spent the first 7 years of my life in Thailand. Many there are homosexual/bisexual/transsexual ect.. probably not more than most other places, but in Thailand, they're not "looked down upon". It's more "normal". People just don't care how you dress or which gender(s) you feel attracted to...
My mother even has 2 sisters who are lesbians. One of them even dresses as a man, introduces herself as a man (using a male name), and has a girlfriend...
So I wouldn't say I grew up with a mental barrier at all. I think women are pretty, even beautiful, but I am not attracted to them, nor am I aroused/interested in lesbian pornography. I don't know what it is- I am just not interest.
That's just the way God made us - just kidding, lol.
I'm even a supporter of gay rights and gay adoption, but that's another story.
I disagree.
I've known people who spent years confused and worried. They didn't know who or what they were. I had a friend who actually went to Exodus ministries to de-gay himself (guess what? one failed marriage and two children later, it didn't take!). I knew another guy who knew he was gay but refused to act on it. Another tried to "prove" to himself and the people around him that he was straight by having sex with girls in public places. They were all so worried about what other people said they weren't being themselves.
And then there's me. I wanted to wait to come out because I didn't want to be "tokenized", but maybe I need to say something here.
As for me, I am a girl but I wasn't born into a girls body. I'm a transsexual woman and I spent my life raised to be like my dad who is a big, manly, sports-obsessed man. Me, I never got it, but spending years and years in an environment where any feminine behavior is quickly and harshly punished hurt. I was confused and scared but I tried and tried to be a "normal" boy. I never could get it and was just angry and hated the world for it. Society was telling me that trans-people are these weirdos on Jerry Springer; you know what I mean: the eight foot tall woman with a five o'clock shadow, linebacker shoulders and a voice that makes Barry White sound like a soprano. I knew I wasn't that but I still knew I was different. Things changed when I actually started to transition and I realized that most trans people aren't like that. Yeah, you might see ones like that once in a while, but you DON'T notice the rest of them who are just living their normal lives... simply because they blend in so well that they don't get noticed. I started reading stories of other transsexual women and could relate with so much of what they said and I watched vlogs from some of the transsexual women on YouTube and was amazed how good many of them looked. Finally, I started my own transition, but I still can't help but think, I would be alot happier and more successful now if I had transitioned sooner and that probably would have happened if society hadn't made me feel like a freak.
